Click - For Infrared Certified Training Class (http://www.infrared-certified.com/) Most people are familiar with traditional insulating materials such as fiberglass, cellulose, Styrofoam, and rock wool. These products use their ability to absorb or resist (slow down) convective and conductive heat transfer to insulate (R-value). A third, seldom discussed but dominant form of heat transfer exists: radiant heat transfer. What are the differences among the three forms of heat transfer? Conductive: Direct contact. If you touch a pot on the stove, this is conductive heat transfer. Convective: Steam, moisture. If you put your hand above a boiling pot, you will feel heat in the form of steam. This is convective heat transfer. Radiant: Electromagnetic. Step outside on a sunny day and feel the sun’s rays on your face. You are feeling radiant heat transfer. All objects above absolute zero (-459.7 degrees F.) emit infrared rays in a straight line in all directions. A radiant barrier reflects radiant heat energy instead of trying to absorb it. What does this mean in your home or business? During the winter, 50-75% of heat loss through the ceiling/roofing system and 65-80% of heat loss through walls is radiant. In the summer, up to 93% of heat gain is radiant. Energy Audits Get Hot Again With soaring heating costs this winter, more people and businesses are turning to a simple tool that can reduce utility bills www.dsireusa.org - really good list for each state (http://www.dsireusa.org/) Financing Upgrades and Weatherization Many energy improvements are unique because while reducing your energy bills they can increase your disposable income even as you pay for the improvements. Financing energy efficiency improvements in your home mortgage can be an excellent way to go. You have the advantage of (1) low monthly payments due to a 30-year term and a relatively low interest rate; and (2) interest that is deductible from your income tax. The improvements listed in the Improvements that Save More than they Cost section of the Home Energy Tune-uP® Report will generally qualify for financing since they increase the value of the house without reducing your disposable income. The FHA Streamlined (k) Limited Repair Program (http://portal.hud.gov/portal/page?_pageid=73,1829080 _dad=portal _schema=PORTAL) is intended to facilitate uncomplicated rehabilitation and/or improvements to a home for which plans, consultants, engineers and/or architects are not required. The Streamlined (k) program includes the following energy efficiency improvements:Upgrade of heating/cooling systems and water heaters Weatherization, including insulation, seal-up and window replacement Purchase and installation of appliances, including refrigerators, freezers, and washers/dryersIt has no minimum repair cost thresholdIt has a maximum mortgage amount for repair costs of $35,000 It can be issued by any FHA lenderIt does not require a ratingSee HUD Mortgagee Letter 2005-50 for details of the programThe unsecured Fannie Mae Energy Loan for $1,000 to $20,000 is available from a few lenders. The Energy Loan’s 10-year term and interest rates are generally better than those offered by contractors or suppliers, though not as good as the Streamlined (K).Some electric or gas utilities offer financing for energy efficiency improvements, as well as rebates for energy efficient appliances and heating and cooling systems. Check your utilities' website for more information about financing and rebates that may be available.
